Oscar Piastri delivered a flawless performance at the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix, securing a dominant win to extend his championship lead. The Australian ace led McLaren teammate Lando Norris in a powerful 1-2 finish, capping off a race filled with late-race chaos involving Max Verstappen and George Russell.
Starting from pole, Piastri got off to a perfect launch, quickly pulling ahead while Verstappen jumped Norris into Turn 1. Norris later reclaimed the position, but Verstappen surged ahead of both McLarens after the first round of pit stops, briefly taking the lead.
However, Red Bull opted for an aggressive three-stop strategy for Verstappen, with an early second stop returning the lead to Piastri. Speculation swirled about whether fresher tyres could hand Verstappen the advantage in the final laps.
That gamble backfired when a late Safety Car – caused by a mechanical issue on Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes – reshuffled the field. Piastri and Norris capitalized during the restart, charging ahead in a six-lap sprint to the finish. Verstappen, meanwhile, dropped to fourth behind Charles Leclerc and soon clashed with Russell in a tense battle. The two collided, sending Verstappen off-track and forcing him to relinquish the position.
Moments later, another incident between Verstappen and Russell resulted in a 10-second penalty for the Red Bull driver, ending his podium hopes.
Up front, Piastri cruised to his fifth win of the season, followed closely by Norris. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium in third. Russell finished fourth, while Nico Hülkenberg produced a standout drive from P15 to secure fifth for Kick Sauber.
Lewis Hamilton took sixth for Ferrari, with Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls) in seventh and Pierre Gasly (Alpine) in eighth. Fernando Alonso finally scored his first points of the season, finishing ninth at home for Aston Martin, while Verstappen’s penalty dropped him to P10.
Just outside the points was Liam Lawson in P11 for Racing Bulls, followed by Gabriel Bortoleto (P12, Kick Sauber), Yuki Tsunoda (P13, Red Bull), and Carlos Sainz (P14, Williams) in a disappointing home outing. Alpine’s Franco Colapinto came home 15th.
Haas drivers Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman rounded out the classified finishers in 16th and 17th. Two drivers failed to finish: Antonelli and Alex Albon, the latter retiring due to front wing damage.
Notably absent from the grid was Lance Stroll, who withdrew on Saturday due to hand and wrist pain requiring medical treatment.
Driver Reaction:
Piastri was thrilled with the result:
“It was a bit of a surprise to see Max go for a three-stop – and it nearly paid off – but overall, it’s been a fantastic weekend. We had the pace when it mattered. After a tough start in practice, the team pulled together, and we delivered. This is a great bounce-back after Monaco.”
