Barcelona striker and captain of the Polish national football team, Robert Lewandowski, has decided to withdraw from the upcoming friendly matches against Moldova and Finland. His decision has sparked a wave of reactions in his homeland, where some of the public and the media have interpreted it as unprofessional and dishonest.
However, the 35-year-old goal scorer did not remain silent to the criticism and decided to explain the reason for his absence through media statements. As he pointed out, the decision was made due to physical and mental exhaustion after a long and hard season with Barcelona. “I do not feel the need to justify myself in detail. At that moment,
I believed that the decision was correct and I stand behind it. I believe that the national team has the capacity to cope without me. Poland must not depend on just one player,” said Lewandowski, adding that for years he has been carrying the burden of the national jersey, which is not easy at all.
